Citizenship by Birth |
|
Who
is a Dane by Birth? |
|
|
| |
- Legitimate children of Danish nationals, irrespective
of whether they were born in Denmark or in any
other country
- When the child's parents are not married
and only the father is a Danish national,
the child will only acquire Danish nationality
if born within Denmark
- If a child of a Danish father and an alien
mother has not acquired Danish nationality
at birth, the child will acquire Danish nationality
through the subsequent marriage of the parents
provided the child is unmarried and under
18 years of age at the time of parents' marriage
- A child found abandoned in Denmark

Citizenship by Adoption |
|
| You
become a Danish citizenship by adoption if: |

- You
are under 12 years of age and adopted, through
a Danish adoption order, by a married couple
where at least one of the spouses is a Danish
national, or by an unmarried Danish national
Note: Danish nationality
is acquired from the time when the
legal effects of the adoption come
into force

| 3. Danish
Citizenship by Declaration |
|
| You
may acquire Danish citizenship by making a
declaration to that effect if: |

|
| |
- You
are between the age of 18 and 23 and have lived
in Denmark for an aggregate period of not less
than 10 years, of which an aggregate period of
not less than 5 years within the last 6 years
- You
are a natural-born Danish national and lived
in Denmark until attaining the age of 18, provided
that you have lived in Denmark during the last
two years preceding the declaration
Note:
If you hold a foreign nationality, such declaration can only
be made if you prove that this will cause you to lose your
foreign nationality

| 4. Danish
Citizenship by Naturalization |
|
| You
may be naturalized as a Dane if: |
| |
|
| |
- You
are at least 18 years of age and have been a
continuous resident in Denmark for at least 9
years possessing certain knowledge of the Danish
language
- The
required period of residence
is only 8 years, for stateless
citizens and refugees
Note: If
you are a Nordic national this
period is reduced to 2 years.
If you have been married to a
Danish citizen for at least 3
years, you require only 6 years
of residence in Denmark
- You
must renounce your former
citizenship except when you
are a refugee or when renunciation
is either legally or de facto
impossible

| 5. Loss
of Danish Citizenship |
| |
- You
will lose your Danish Citizenship if you acquire
another nationality by petition, explicit consent
or by taking up a position with the public authorities
of another country
Note: If
you are a Danish national, born
abroad but have never lived in
Denmark nor stayed there under
conditions indicating interdependence
with the country, you will lose
your Danish citizenship upon attaining
the age of 22. However, this does
not apply should you thereby become
stateless
Residence in a Nordic country for an aggregate period of not
less than 7 years is equivalent to residence in Denmark

Danish Citizenship |

| You
can recover your lost Danish citizenship, if: |

|
| |
- You
are a natural-born Danish national who has lived
in Denmark until attaining the age of 18 and
also during the last 2 years preceding the nationality
declaration
Note: If you hold a foreign
nationality, such declaration can only be made
if you prove that this will cause you to lose
your foreign nationality
- You
have lost your Danish citizenship and have subsequently
remained a national of a Nordic country after
having taken up permanent residence in Denmark
